The psychedelic rock band Black Hundreds is composed of Jacob Gardner on guitar, lead vocals and keyboards, Dave Ozinga on bass, keyboards, drums and vocals, Mark Green on guitar and Nick French on drums and bass. The foursome just started playing together this year but have already gained a significant fan base.
Daily Nebraskan: How would you describe your sound? What genre would you call yourselves?
Jacob Gardner & Dave Ozinga: Robots braiding their hair. Also, noise. Some drunken dude at our last show called us "cosmic rock," but you'd have to find out for yourself.
DN: Who are your influences?
JG & DO: Brian Jonestown Massacre, Syd Barrett, Neil Young, Radiohead, The Beatles, The Stooges, Sonic Youth, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, The Zombies, The Smiths, Spacemen 3, Built To Spill, Fugazi to name a few. We're influenced equally by a lot of '60s psychedelic bands, shoegazer and American indie rock.
DN: Do you have any albums out?
JG & DO: We're currently recording as many songs as we can. We hope to release a split record with Lord Mandrake, a really cool psychedelic/shoegazer band from Salt Lake City, Utah. Then we kick off the revolution where the Brian Jonestown Massacre left off.
DN: Who writes the lyrics and what are the predominant themes?
JG: Basically, I'm just trying to say something truthful about life, whether it's a feeling that I've had or a half-remembered dream - I'm trying to express what it's like to be a person.
DN: Why Black Hundreds? Where did your name come from?
JG & DO: It's an interesting historical footnote misappropriated for our own uses. Plus, it sounds cool. Devendra Banhart thought it was an excellent choice.
DN: What are your top five favorite Beatles songs?
JG & DO: This could be the hardest question you've asked, so here's our top six, in no order: "I'm Only Sleeping," "Sexy Sadie," "Rain," "I Am The Walrus," "She Said, She Said" and "Tomorrow Never Knows."
DN: Are you planning any tours in the future?
JG & DO: It's still pretty early right now, but we're planning one for next summer, including shows on both coasts, Utah and Texas.
Check out the Black Hundreds tonight at Box Awesome, 815 O St., for an all-ages show at 6 p.m. Compiled by Calli Lounsbury. callilounsbury@dailynebraskan.com.
