Road trips are a fun and easy way to hang out with friends. They're also a great way to deplete a college student's short supply of funds. College students are known for being poor, and high gas prices aren't making things any easier.

Sarah McCown, a junior French major, said she would go on more road trips if gas prices were lower. McCown traveled to Florida in May, making a stop in Tennessee along the way. She hoped to travel to Florida again before summer ended but was unable to do so because of fuel costs.

McCown is a campus manager for the Disney College Program and made the trip to Walt Disney World when she went to Florida. Even though McCown acknowledges the high gas prices, she plans on driving to Florida next May.

Other students aren't as fortunate as McCown.

Erica Wilsey, a freshman pre-dental/hygiene major, moved around a lot when she was younger and has seen a lot of the United States while on road trips with her family. Lately, she hasn't gone on any road trips but said she definitely would if gas prices were lower.

Tiffany Moeller, a sophomore chemical engineering major, said she doesn't really go on road trips. She said it's not so much the gas prices, but it's the overall expense of the trip. But she'd still love to see Colorado. If Moeller ever does make the trip to Colorado, she said she would think about traveling by train or bus.

In contrast to going on road trips at all, Kevin Hanefeld, a junior political science major from Hastings, is happy right where he is. There's "nowhere else I want to be," Hanefeld said, adding gas prices aren't an issue. He goes home when he wants but doesn't think of it as a road trip.

Overall, college students' opinions vary on most topics and road trips are just another thing on that long list. Perhaps, you're a road trip junkie who goes somewhere exciting every weekend or maybe you're like Hanefeld who stays around town just "enjoying here."
