As you head home for the holidays, think about a visit to your closet.

It's time to purge the summer gear you neglected to wear for the second year in a row, donate the winter garb you don't intend to wear this season and reinvent your wardrobe - not to mention pack.

When you go through your clothes, picking out what to pack, take note of the garments you automatically ignore. Are those items serving a purpose in your wardrobe?

The only reason to hold on to outdated or ill-fitting items is if they have an extraordinary amount of sentimental value. Otherwise, get rid of that old garb to make room for the new. If you haven't worn something in the past year, it's most likely just wasting space.

Clutter only limits your ability to clearly see what you have. A clean and organized closet allows you to visualize outfits. It may also provide you with a creative state of mind.

You may find it helpful to reorganize your closet, too. Knowing where your camisoles and sweaters are will make getting ready in the morning less stressful and more fun.

You might organize your closet by colors or seasons; either way, the strategic placement of each item will directly affect how often you wear it.

Also, displaying your shoes and accessories will give you the chance to take stock of what you have to work with. The colors and textures can even inspire your entire outfit for the day.

Looking through your closet, you'll find pieces you haven't seen in a while; you'll fall back in love with certain items and will appreciate them like you did when you first purchased them.

Then, you can mix and match those rediscovered gems with newer items in your closet.

After you've sifted through your clothes, if you are left with mere undergarments, it's time to shop.

If you do head out shopping, give the clothes in the store the same consideration you gave the garments in your closet. Make sure each item you own is serving a purpose in your closet. Be certain the pieces will be used for multiple outfits or will be worn on more than one occasion. Winter is typically the time of year when clothing creativity comes sliding to a halt. Don't let it happen to you.
