This fall is filled with new trends and amped-up basics. In an effort to organize the hottest looks, I've compiled a fall fashion overview.

It all begins with complete themes for a certain look. Then it can be broken down from head to toe, moving from fashionable fabrics and textures to the trends in jeans, "it" accessories and chic shoes.

Complete Looks: From the runways to the streets, preppy plaids, military structures, modern '20s, '80s hues and bold basics are the trends to look for this fall. Asymmetric necklines are also back in the spotlight.

Combining these looks can be dangerous. Be brave with patterns and prints but avoid fashion schizophrenia by sticking to one look at a time.

Layered looks are always great, and they're essential for fall. This season, it's all about slim, fitted basics under chunky knits or oversized cardigans.

Fabrics/textures: The autumn season always brings out inviting and interesting fabrics. Texture is a great way to liven up an outfit. Velvet, feathers, fringe, suede and leather are the hot materials happening now.

Jeans: Denim is always around, and jeans will forever be an American staple. The styles, though, are evolving with the weather. Skinny jeans are still popular, but ankle zippers are spicing them up a bit now. Wide leg jeans are also still in style; fortunately, this style of pant is flattering on almost every figure. Other denim styles gracing the streets are high-waisted jeans and "boyfriend" jeans. Baggy "boyfriend" jeans have been seen in gossip magazines on celebs from Heidi Klum to Reese Witherspoon.

Jewelry/Accessories: It's time to get crazy for accessories. This season accessories are making a trend of their own. Seek daring statement necklaces, '20s-inspired hair pieces and funky scarves.

Shoes: Strappy, leather gladiator sandals are still chic while the weather is warm, but laced-up ankle boots and platform pumps are stealing the scene this season. Slouchy knee-high boots and buckle details are interesting elements to look for.

If you're not into being trendy, here are a few sure fire items that defy decades: tailored blazers, wide leg trousers, turtle necks, pencil skirts, diamonds, pearls, trench coats, properly proportioned cardigans and little black dresses.

From fringe to ankle boots, fashion this fall is fun.
